ADSL Broadband Buying Guide

If you’ve been looking for a new Internet service, then you have no doubt heard about ADSL internet. ADSL has been a technological breakthrough, and it is a vastly superior experience to traditional dial-up services. There are many other benefits as well. Here are a few to keep in mind as you decide whether or not ADSL is right for you.

1. Price

One of the great things about ADSL is the price. It simply isn’t as expensive as many other comparable internet services. Many Internet service providers offer a low-cost trial period so that you can decide whether or not you think the service is worth the cost. For $9.99 per month, you don’t have much to lose by at least giving it a try.

2. Speed

ADSL Internet is great because of the wide variety of speed choices available to you. At the low end of the spectrum, you can get a data plan that will provide you with a download speed of 256 Kb per second and an upload speed of 64 Kb per second. This is a great plan if you want quick speeds while checking your email or while browsing the internet. It’s also the most economical. On the other hand, if you want lightning quick download speeds, ADSL can accommodate up to 24 Mb per second.

3. Download Limits

You can also control your download limits with ADSL service. Generally, the more you download, the higher of a limit you should choose to avoid paying additional charges. If you mostly like to read, then you have an advantage because text generally uses much less bandwidth than other multimedia files. If you plan on watching a lot of videos online, then you may need to opt for a higher limit.

4. Contract

Another great thing about ADSL is that you often have the choice of whether or not you want to sign a contract with the Internet service provider. Many of them offer month-to-month service, which you can cancel at anytime. However, once you find an ADSL service provider you like, it may be advantageous to sign a contract with them so that you can lock in a low monthly rate for the next few years. Contracts of this sort typically run for 24 months.

5. Location

ADSL can particularly be a great choice depending on your location. ADSL is now widely available in urban areas. Unfortunately, if you live in a rural area, then this may not be a viable choice for you – but you should check with you phone company to make sure. One great thing about ADSL is that the signal is stronger the closer you are to the ADSL provider’s service exchange. If you happen to live near one of these exchanges, then you can be assured that you will be able to get a higher quality and faster service than most of your neighbours.

6. Extras

ADSL packages often come with a slew of extras, which can make the service a far better value. Usually you can access a hotline to get free technical advice, so you won’t need to spend hours wondering why your service isn’t working. You can also often secure free off-peak downloading, which is invaluable if you regularly push your download limits. You can also sometimes get a free wireless modem if you want to set up a wireless network in your home.

7. Bundles

ADSL is great because it lends itself to bundle packages. It is often possible to get both your phone and Internet service for a lower price than if you were to purchase each separately.

8. Reputation

Reputation is an important consideration when choosing your ADSL service. Ideally, you’d like a service provider that offers reliable service and provides good customer support at a reasonable price. You may want to ask your friends or read reviews online before you make your decision.

There are quite a few benefits to ADSL over other Internet technologies. If you keep the above factors in mind, you should be able to make a great choice that you are happy with.
