Cable Broadband Speed
If you have been browsing through your options for Internet service, then you have undoubtedly heard about cable broadband. Since it was introduced to Australia, cable Internet has become wildly popular. To help you decide whether cable broadband is the choice for you, let's take a look at some of the major considerations.
What is Cable Broadband?
Cable broadband works on the same technology that is used to deliver cable television to your home. One of the major reasons for its widespread adoption is the blazing fast speeds that it can provide to its users. In some areas, the theoretical rate of speed can actually be as high as 50 Mb per second. Of course, theoretical rates are rarely reached in practice, and even this rate isn't available in all locations. Even with these caveats, cable Internet is still probably one of the fastest Internet options available to you. Currently, Optus and Big Pond are the only two providers of cable broadband.
Who Should Consider Cable Broadband?
There are several reasons that you might decide that cable broadband may be the best possible choice for your Internet service. The first is if you already have television service through either Optus or Big Pond. If you do, then you may be able to get a better rate than ordinary subscribers by opting for a package deal. The cable companies will often sell both Internet and cable television together at a cheaper rate than if you were to buy them both separately.
The second reason you might opt for cable broadband is if you desire a super fast Internet connection. While this may sound like a great idea, keep in mind that it's not necessarily for everyone; and you'll have to pay a little more for this extra speed. If you mostly use the Internet to browse the web and to check your email, then it's unlikely that you'll notice any appreciable difference from a slower broadband technology such as ADSL. On the other hand, if you watch and download large media files or play graphic-intensive online games on a regular basis, then you'll notice the difference immediately.
Comparison With Other Technologies
A couple other technologies that are worth checking out before you make your final decision are ADSL and ADSL2+ broadband services. In terms of speed, ADSL2+ is very similar to cable broadband. Rather than using your cable television wires, ADSL2+ uses your telephone line. It is worth noting that you also often have bundling options with ADSL2+. It is sometimes possible to get it at a cheaper rate if you also buy landline telephone service. If you have phone service, but not television service, then it might make more sense to go that route. ADSL can be a more economical choice to either ADSL2+ or cable broadband. This would be a better option if you want fast speed, but don't necessarily want to pay for breakneck speed.
Overall, cable broadband is a great option for your Internet service. Just make sure to compare it to your other choices to make the best decision possible.
